Labor Day was born out of the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800s. Back then, exhausting hours, child labor, and a lack of basic worker protections led to nationwide strikes and rallies. In response, states began recognizing the need for a “working man’s holiday” and, in 1894, President Grover Cleveland officially declared Labor Day a national holiday.
Today, Labor Day is often seen as summer’s unofficial send-off: a weekend packed with back-to-school sales, family barbecues, and last-chance lake or beach trips. And while we love a good summer celebration, here at The Healing Rose, we invite you to consider a gentler approach: use this time to rest, restore, and reconnect with yourself.
Many of us, especially Millennials, were raised on the idea that our productivity defines our worth. Academic performance was constantly tested, and you had better measure up, or you fall behind. Going to college after high school was not much of a choice; it was just what was expected after high school. Entering the workforce in the early 2000s was immediately followed by a national financial crisis, and second jobs or side hustles became the norm. Combine these factors with the rise of social media and increased comparison syndrome, and looking busy became associated with success. People wore “busy” with a badge of honor.
Luckily, this idea is shifting. Research shows that rest isn’t just good, it’s essential. A recent study by the University of Georgia found that employees who used their vacation time (and fully disconnected from work during their break) experienced higher levels of well-being and genuine restoration. Another study found a positive correlation between employee well-being and productivity, and even better stock market performance for publicly-traded companies.
In the modern workplace, mental health is finally getting the attention it deserves. Employers encourage regular breaks, flexible hours, and paid time off to prevent burnout. Insurance policies often include counseling or therapy sessions as part of overall wellness plans. Family life is allowed to be a priority. Taking time away from the grind doesn’t slow us down; rather, it helps us return with clarity, creativity, and renewed energy.
This Labor Day, instead of filling your weekend with obligations, consider doing less. Ask yourself: What have I been craving time for? When was the last time you curled up in bed and read for pleasure in the middle of the day, or soaked in a warm botanical bath just because it felt good?
You’ve worked hard, and you deserve to honor that effort with rest. Whether that means a quiet afternoon with a cup of tea, a walk in nature, or simply doing absolutely nothing, we hope you find a moment to restore yourself. At The Healing Rose, we celebrate your accomplishments and support your self-care journey. This Labor Day, let rest be your reward.
