St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. In Massachusetts, that’s an opportunity to celebrate our state’s rich Irish heritage, and among cannabis enthusiasts it’s an opportunity to celebrate all things green. At The Healing Rose, we want to take the time to reflect on New England’s unique place within St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and perhaps trade a Guinness for a gummy.

Why Does St. Patrick’s Day Matter in New England?

Chicago dyes its river green each year, and Savannah boasts one of the largest parades, but St. Patrick’s Day is undeniably a Boston holiday. Bostonians were the first people to celebrate the holiday in North America, with festivities kicking off in 1737. That first event was held by the volunteers of the Charitable Irish Society, and through wars, pandemics, racial tensions, and bureaucratic hurdles the marching bands and banners have made their way through the Boston streets (almost) every year since.

Irish culture runs deep in Massachusetts. Immigrants from Ireland began arriving in Massachusetts in the 18th century, fleeing first from harsh economic circumstances and then from mass starvation in what became known as the Great Famine. Today, almost 22% of people in Massachusetts identify as Irish-American, and among major American cities, Boston has some of the most Irish pubs per capita. Then, of course, our NBA team is the Boston Celtics.

We all look for ways to celebrate that not only honor the cultural legacy of Irish New England, but embrace the other cultures and communities that matter to us, too.
