Tinctures are potent liquid extracts derived from herbs, often included in traditional medicine practices. CBD tinctures can be made with several different carrier oils and cannabinoid extracts, and are typically administered by a few sublingual drops. They are one of the most popular formats for consuming CBD and other cannabinoids, with the benefit of rapid absorption of the concentrated into the bloodstream – much quicker than absorption from edibles.

Cannabinoid Wellness on Your Terms

Modern life is full of stressors – deadlines, screen time, traffic, and long to-do lists – and natural relief comes in many forms. Just like taking a long walk in the woods or sitting down for an afternoon of your favorite craft, making tinctures at home is a great way to seek balance and holistic wellness in your life.

At The Healing Rose, our tinctures support different needs, including rest, energy, and general wellbeing. Customers often ask how we create our award-winning formulations, so in this article we are sharing a simple process for making CBD tinctures in the comfort of your own kitchen. By creating your own, you can tailor your dosage and extract blend to best support your body.

Step 1: Choose your carrier oil

Carrier oils help deliver the CBD to your bloodstream, and several oils work well in combination with cannabinoid distillates. Our CBD tinctures are made with certified organic fractionated coconut oil, which has a long shelf life and is easy to work with. Other carrier oil options include avocado, safflower, hemp seed, or olive oil. Many of these carrier oils have a shelf life of 6 to18 months months if stored properly in a cool, dark place.

Step 2: Choose your Extracts

Our CBD distillates are either full spectrum or broad spectrum. Full spectrum extracts may contain up to 0.3% THC, while the THC is completely removed in full spectrum extracts, but neither of these extracts will make you feel high. In addition to CBD extracts, The Healing Rose offers a THCV & CBDV Rich CBD CO2 distillate for an uplifting effect, CBG:CBD 1:1 Full Spectrum CO2 to support focus and clarity, and CBN isolate to contribute to a restorative night’s sleep.

Step 3: Calculate the amount of extract needed for your tincture

One gram of CBD distillate typically contains 750 milligrams of CBD. To make one fluid ounce of tincture with a potency of 750 milligrams CBD, you’ll need one gram of distillate to 27 grams of carrier oil.

For a more potent tincture – 1500 milligrams of CBD – you’ll need two grams of distillate to 26 grams of carrier oil.

Step 3b: Add Minor Cannabinoids (Optional)

Blended distillates, including those with THCV, CBG, and CBN, have a variety of beneficial properties. Learn more about the unique properties of different minor cannabinoids on The Healing Rose blog.

You can find the lab results for each of our extracts here.

Step 4: Warm it up

Low and slow is the way to go. Add your carrier oil to a double boiler and begin with low heat. Using a thermometer, gently warm the oil to 150 degrees.

Make sure the oil temperature does not exceed 165 degrees. If the temperature gets higher than 170 degrees, your tincture can still be effective, but overheating can reduce its potency.

Step 5: Blend your extracts into your carrier oil

Add your desired CBD and other extracts to your warm oil. It’s important to stir constantly for about 5 minutes to ensure everything is completely dissolved. We recommend using a non-reactive stirring spoon when working with oils.

The heating and stirring process should not take more than 20 minutes. Remember to keep an eye on the temperature.

Step 6: Experiment with Herbal Combinations (Optional)

Herbs are plants with savory, aromatic, or medicinal properties, and while this guide is for an unadorned CBD tincture, herbs can add dimension to your custom blend. Ashwagandha, holy basil, tea, and other natural ingredients are popular additions in traditional tincture recipes.

Step 7: Bottle your new tincture!

Once cooled, pour the mixture through a funnel into a clean glass jar that has a dropper lid. (You can find some great options here.) When using your dropper, make sure to release the drops without touching any surface to avoid contamination.
